Choosing a Suitable Location for Mounting
The VNM 250 is designed to be used either as a free‑standing unit or mounted in a 19‑inch
rack using optional mounting kits. Wherever the unit is mounted, observe the Environmental
Requirements listed below.
Environmental Requirements
ATTENTION: The points in this section must always be observed whether the
VNM250 is free‑standing or rack‑mounted.
Orientation
The VNM 250 is designed to be used free‑standing on a stable, horizontal surface. It can,
however, be used in any orientation subject to the necessary ventilation requirements.
Temperature
z Do not install or operate the VNM 250 in an area where the ambient temperature
exceeds 35 °C (95 °F) or falls below 5 °C (35 °F).
z The VNM 250 and its associated power supply produce heat, which may affect the
ambient temperature.
z After the VNM 250 has been in use for a period of time, the external casing may
become slightly warm to the touch. Ensure that any adjacent surfaces are not affected
by the heat.
Ventilation
Do not obstruct the ventilation openings during use. The VNM 250 has an integral forced‑air
cooling system. A fan draws air in through the ventilation openings in the front panel and
expels the heated air through the openings in the back panel. The fan speed is controlled
automatically by an internal temperature sensor. The fan may, therefore, appear to run faster
as the unit warms up or if the ambient temperature increases.
A self‑resetting thermal cutoff shuts down the VNM 250 if the temperature exceeds design
limits.

Humidity and water
Do not install or operate the VNM 250 in an area:
z where the ambient relative humidity exceeds 85%
z that is prone to condensation
z near water or in a location that may be prone to water
Mounting Procedures
WARNINGS:
• This equipment must be grounded.
• To avoid the possible risk of electric shock or product damage due to
condensation, always allow the power supply to adapt to the ambient temperature
and humidity for at least 30 minutes before switching it on. This is particularly
important when moving the unit from a cold location to a warm location.
The VN‑Matrix 250 Series encoders and decoders are housed in rack mountable, 1U high,
metal enclosures. Optional mounting hardware lets you install the unit in any standard
19‑inch rack or under or through furniture.
Tabletop Use
For tabletop use, affix one of the supplied self‑adhesive rubber feet to each corner of the
bottom of the unit.
Rack-Mounting
UL Rack-Mounting Guidelines
The following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) requirements pertain to the installation of the
VN‑Matrix 250 into a rack.
Elevated operating ambient temperature — If the equipment is installed in a closed or
multi‑unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may
be greater than room ambient temperature. Therefore, consider installing the equipment
in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (Tma = +122 °F
[+50°C]) specified by Extron.
Reduced air flow — Install the equipment in a rack so that the amount of air flow required
for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.
Mechanical loading — Mount the equipment in the rack so that uneven mechanical
loading does not create a hazardous condition.
Circuit overloading — When connecting the equipment to the supply circuit, consider
the effect that circuit overloading might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring.
Consider equipment nameplate ratings when addressing this concern.
Reliable earthing (grounding) — Maintain reliable grounding of rack‑mounted equipment.
Pay particular attention to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch
circuit (such as use of power strips).
Mounting Instructions
Mount the unit in a rack or under or through furniture in accordance with the directions
included with the mounting kit.
